Rogowski-Coil

Rogowski Coil (ROGO Coil)

Partial discharge (PD) activity is a leading indicator of insulation failure in high voltage insulation systems, especially in high voltage transformers. PD measurement in industrial environments requires noise filtering. The Dynamic Ratings Rogowski Coil allows for advanced noise rejection based on pulse polarity when used in conjunction with a BAU+ Sensor. With this added level of filtering, a transformer monitor can utilize lower frequencies to provide deeper “visibility” of PD within the win

Overview

What Are the Benefits of a Rogowski Coil for Partial Discharge Monitoring?

The Dynamic Ratings Rogowski Coil improves partial discharge (PD) monitoring by enabling advanced noise rejection based on pulse polarity when paired with a BAU+ sensor, allowing a transformer monitor to use lower frequencies for deeper visibility into PD activity within the windings. The coil is built from UV-resistant materials, installs quickly and non-intrusively with a buckle strap, and uses IP67-rated connections suited for harsh environments.

What Size Options Are Available for Rogowski Coils?

Rogowski Coils are available in multiple sizes to fit a wide variety of bushing diameters. The coil fits around the base of the bushing below the bottom skirt/shed, and the correct size is selected based on the circumference of the bushing’s porcelain base.

How Does a Rogowski Coil Connect to the BAU+ Sensor?

The Rogowski Coil connects to the preamplifier inside the BAU+ sensor via an IP67-rated connector, and its signal travels through a second coaxial cable to the PD monitor — with the same cable also powering the Rogowski Coil amplifier from the PD monitor. Pulse polarity readings from both the Rogowski Coil and the BAU+ sensor are compared to determine the direction of the PD signal, which is how the added noise rejection is achieved.

FAQ

What is a Rogowski coil?

A Rogowski coil is a current sensor used to measure alternating current without requiring a solid magnetic core. It provides a flexible and accurate method for current measurement.

Why are Rogowski coils used in monitoring systems?

Rogowski coils allow current measurements to be added to monitoring systems without major modifications to existing equipment.

Can Rogowski coils be installed on energized equipment?

Installation requirements depend on site procedures and safety practices. Utilities should always follow approved work procedures and manufacturer guidance.

What are the advantages of a Rogowski coil compared to traditional CTs?

Rogowski coils are lightweight, flexible, easier to retrofit, and can accommodate a wide range of conductor sizes.

Are Rogowski coils suitable for retrofit projects?

Yes. Their flexible design makes them particularly attractive for retrofit applications where conventional sensors may be difficult to install.
