Observations to ensure all-weather capability

Defense forces around the world rely heavily on weather conditions and meteorological forecasts to plan operations and training exercises. In field operations, a superior knowledge of weather conditions has always been advantageous. While modern numerical weather models enhance weather forecasting capabilities, immediate, local weather observations are essential to create accurate weather data reports in support of operational safety and efficiency.

  • Ground operations

Vaisala provides easy-to-use weather measurement systems for acquiring rich and accurate meteorological information for the full atmospheric profile from surface up to 30 kilometers.

  • Naval weather

Accurate weather information is vital for ensuring the safety and effective operation of naval vessels. Vaisala solutions are the comprehensive answer to most common naval weather challenges.

  • Airfield operations

Ensure operational capability in all weather conditions and prepare to face adverse weather in your airfield operations with the right kind of situational awareness, whether operating a fixed or temporary airfield.

  • Range support & Space launches

Accurate weather measurements ensure that test ranges and space launch facilities have complete and up-to-date awareness of the atmospheric conditions to ensure the mission criteria is met for a successful outcome.

Secure & Resilient Weather Data

In modern defense operations, precise weather data can determine mission success or failure. The Vaisala RS41-SGM radiosonde is designed to combat the challenges posed by electronic warfare, GPS jamming, and message spoofing.

Weather Security for Defense: The Resilient Vaisala RS41-SGM Radiosonde

Securing your weather data with message authentication

We verify radiosonde messages with cryptographically generated Message Authentication Codes (MACs) to prevent tampering or falsification.

  • Uses HMAC-SHA256, a widely trusted cryptographic standard

  • RS41-SGM radiosondes encrypt data, for extra security

  • Other RS41 models prevent tampering with authentication codes but do not encrypt data

  • A secret key is generated for each sounding

  • The key is securely shared with the radiosonde during ground check

  • Radiosonde adds authentication codes to all sent messages

  • The ground station validates messages and discards unauthenticated ones
