Technical note
Why is detecting wind variations ahead of and around a wind farm important?
Strong wind fluctuations lead to significant variations in power production. When sudden and unpredicted, these variations can have major economic and technical impacts due to the imbalance between forecasted and actual energy delivered to grid operators. These gaps result in penalties, increased costs, and direct revenue losses.
However, this also presents an opportunity to leverage the energy trading market and improve wind energy's contribution to balancing markets. Better forecasts reduce imbalance costs in electricity markets, where operators are penalized for inaccurate predictions. Improved bidding strategies in intraday markets allow operators to sell power more profitably, enhancing revenue predictability and supporting financing and investment decisions.
Accurate forecasts help grid operators plan how much electricity will come from wind versus other sources. This enables a reduction in the need for reserve power (backup generators or batteries) while improving overall grid stability.
Improved curtailment planning allows operators to manage power output proactively during grid congestion.
In micro-grids with high dependence on wind energy, such as island or isolated electrical networks, accurate forecasting is essential. Even small variations in wind power production can destabilize the grid and put its balance at risk.
Strong wind ramps, such as gusts and direction changes, can generate substantial loads on wind turbines, potentially reducing their lifespan or damaging components. Accurate short-term forecasting helps mitigate these risks and protect critical assets.
Turbine erection, heavy component servicing, and craning operations require stable wind conditions to be performed safely. Accurate monitoring of surrounding wind conditions improves safety and optimizes operational windows.
Detecting and forecasting wind variations ahead of and around your wind farm transforms how you handle unpredictable conditions. With early visibility into approaching wind changes, wind farm operators gain the critical advantage to optimize energy trading, improve grid stability, protect assets, and ensure safe operations.
As electricity markets evolve and price volatility increases, wind traders and operators face growing financial exposure when actual production deviates from forecasts. Although wind forecasting solutions have improved significantly in recent years, sudden wind ramps, rapid changes in wind speed that can cause large energy swings within minutes, remain challenging to predict accurately.
These minute-scale ramps can increase imbalance costs and put additional pressure on system operators, especially in regions with large wind farm clusters.
Vaisala’s scanning lidar technology can monitor the wind field ahead of the wind farm and alert operators, traders, and system operators with minute-scale accuracy. By detecting ramps before they reach the turbines, it enables better operational and trading decisions and helps reduce financial and operational risk.
